Composting
Good
compost depends on a variety
of ingredients to make the
right mix.

YES
TO...
- ‘Greens’ include
grass cuttings, plant prunings,
veggie peelings, fruit
waste and tea bags
- ‘Browns’ are
slower to rot, these include
fallen leaves, and cardboard
egg boxes
- Egg
shells can be included
in compost to add vital nutirents.

NO
TO...
- Meat,
dairy products, babies nappies
or
any animal droppings. These
can encourage
unwanted pests and create
an odour
- Perennial
weeds such as dandelions
and thistles
- Plastics,

Tips
Your
compost bin or heap should ideally:
- Be placed in a partially
sunny
spot to help
speed up the process
- In
an area that is well drained
to allow
water to drain out
- On soil so that worms can
get in
and help break
down the contents.
The
compost will take about 9 – 12
months to be ready to use. When
it is ready it will have a spongy
texture and be dark brown in
colour. It will be rich in nutrients
which will help to make your
garden grow! |
