compost at home iconGood compost depends on a variety of ingredients to make the right mix.

what you can compost

YES TO...

  • ‘Greens’ include grass cuttings, plant prunings, veggie peelings, fruit waste and tea bags
  • ‘Browns’ are slower to rot, these include fallen leaves, and cardboard egg boxes
  • Egg shells can be included in compost to add vital nutirents.

what you can not compost

NO TO...

  • Meat, dairy products, babies nappies or any animal droppings. These can encourage unwanted pests and create an odour
  • Perennial weeds such as dandelions and thistles
  • Plastics, glass and metals will not decompose into compost.

Top Tips

Your compost bin or heap should ideally:

  • Be placed in a partially sunny spot to help speed up the process
  • In an area that is well drained to allow water to drain out
  • On soil so that worms can get in and help break down the contents.

The compost will take about 9 – 12 months to be ready to use. When it is ready it will have a spongy texture and be dark brown in colour. It will be rich in nutrients which will help to make your garden grow!
