Household Recycling Centres - What can I bring?

Our Centres can accept a wide variety of items from your home, many of which we can recycle. See our index of materials for a comprehensive listing of the things you can bring to our sites.

Below we have provided further information about some of the more problematic materials you may need to dispose of.

Disposing of construction and demolition waste at your Household Recycling Centre

The Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) will accept small quantities of construction and demolition (C&D) waste (examples given below) arising from work carried out by residents on their own property. Our centres, however, have been designed to support only small scale DIY projects, such as a bathroom, kitchen, or a patio for instance.  We have separate containers on our sites for rubble, soil, wood and plasterboard. For larger scale construction projects, such as property renovations, residents will need to arrange their own disposal, such as hiring a skip.

We have this policy for a number of reasons:

  • The sites do not have the capacity available for waste resulting from large scale DIY projects.
  • Vehicles unloading large amounts of construction and demolition (C&D) waste can cause unnecessary delays and queues at our sites.

If appropriate, we may agree a limit on the number of visits to your local site with such waste.

Asbestos

It is not advisable to remove asbestos-containing material yourself - it is a dangerous operation which can result in the release of small asbestos fibres into the air. Breathing in these fibres can eventually lead to a number of fatal diseases.

It is recommended that you engage the services of a professional and licensed contractor to remove asbestos. Local contractors who are licensed to handle, carry and dispose of Asbestos can be found at www.wastedirectory.org.uk

If you have to remove and handle Asbestos from your property there are some essential guidelines you should follow and can be found here

Gloucestershire County Council provides household asbestos disposal facilities. Telephone the Asbestos Disposal booking line on 0845 602 9344 and they will book you in to a disposal site with an appointment time.

Tyres

Please return these to a local tyre fitter. Ski Tyres (01242 519972) are an example. A small charge per tyre will be made for this service.

Household Chemicals

A chemical bank is provided at all Household Recycling Centres for you to deposit your containers of household / garden chemicals and tins of oil and solvent-based paint.

Alternatively to find your nearest chemical bank try the link to the National Household Hazardous Waste Forum (NHHWF) here, they have a chemical bank disposal service finder.
