Talking
Rubbish. There’s no time
to waste.
Gloucestershire
is in danger of sinking under
an ever-increasing mountain of
waste. Every year we dump hundreds
of thousands of tonnes of rubbish
in the county’s landfill
sites and it cannot go on.
Why?
Because
soon all the county’s
landfill sites will be full
and alternative means of disposing
of our rubbish will have to
be
found.
And
because if we don’t
the Government will hit us
where it hurts most – in
our wallets.
Cllr
Stan Waddington, Chair of the
Gloucestershire
Waste
Partnership
said "Gloucestershire
has targets under the Landfill
Allowance Trading Scheme
to reduce the amount of
biodegradable municipal
waste we tip into landfill."
"If
we fail to reach those targets,
we will be fined £150
for every tonne we go
over. If we do nothing
and continue tipping
at our current
rate, then in ten years time, Gloucestershire
will have to find an
extra £78
million pounds in penalties."
We
all have views on these
problems wherever
we live
and whatever
we do and the Great
Gloucestershire Debate wants
to hear
them.
