It's
a glass act!
Around 2.5 million tonnes
of glass bottles and jars are
used each year in the UK, and
in 2005 we recycled more than
1.2 million tonnes of glass. You
can recycle glass jars and
bottles in your kerbside box.
Recycling
just one glass bottle saves
enough energy to…
- power a washing
machine for 10 minutes
- a television
for 15 minutes
- a computer for
20 minutes
- run a light
bulb for almost an hour.
Glass
is a valuable resource to recycle
as it can be reprocessed again
and again without any effect
on its quality and performance.
Research shows that people are
genuinely interested in understanding
the energy savings that result
from recycling.
About 80% of recycled glass
in the UK is used to make new
bottles and jars. Replacing virgin
raw materials with recycled glass
in the manufacturing process
can give energy savings of over
20%. This means that by using
our local glass recycling services
and facilities, we can make a
contribution to tackling climate
change. |
