Cotswold District Council Service Update

Man collecting recyclable rubbish from the side of the road

Cotswold District Council is heading towards the top of Britain’s recycling league table thanks to its new waste collection service.

Landfill waste has more than halved since the service was introduced a few months ago. During those the first eight weeks of the service, a staggering 73.68% of all the waste collected has been either composted or recycled. 49.95% of this total was organic waste (garden and food waste) and 23.72% was dry recycling (paper, glass, cans and cardboard).

Cllr Mark Tufnell, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are delighted by these figures and for the magnificent support given by residents to our new service".

“If we maintain this sort of success we will be go right to the top of the league nationally for our recycling performance.”

Before the introduction of the new service, Cotswold was already the top-performing district in Gloucestershire with an annual combined recycling and composting rate of 43%.

Now, the new weekly collection of food waste for composting and the addition of card and cardboard to the fortnightly recycling collection are enabling residents to divert hundreds more tonnes of rubbish away from landfill sites.

Cllr Tufnell added: “It is unlikely that the annual recycling rate will stay as high as the current 74% mark because the service was introduced part way through the year.

“However, the figures are even better than we had hoped for – and that is thanks to the sterling efforts of all our residents.”

Under the new service, non-recyclable waste is collected fortnightly in Council-issued grey wheeled bins or beige bin bags; food waste and garden waste are collected weekly for composting; paper, glass, cans/tins, card and cardboard are collected fortnightly for recycling.
