It pays to plan

The best way not to fall into the trap of panic buying is to devise a shopping list (that’s a great all-year-round habit too).

Judging how big a turkey to buy can be tricky, it depends on how many people you’ve got for dinner and what else you serve it with. Allow roughly 1lb (450g) per person and you’ll have plenty for the large appetites and a Boxing day curry too! If there are only two of you, consider opting for a turkey crown rather than a whole bird or a smaller bird such as chicken or duck.

A lot of people make a special effort at Christmas, even if they don’t cook very often the rest of the year. But think back to last Christmas – what was left uneaten that you can cut back on this year?

Buy food that you and your family prefer - if guests aren’t as hungry as you had planned because they dropped in on neighbours and feasted on nibbles before coming to you, then at least you can freeze or store for later food that you know your family will enjoy.

Remember most supermarkets are only closed for 2 days, and many garages which are open all over Christmas will sell many food essentials.
