Extended waste collection service ‘wheeled’ out

Gloucester City Council will be expanding its garden waste scheme to a further 1500 homes in the city during June 2009.
The majority of the new properties included will be on the Kingsway and Hempstead developments.
It will take the total number of garden waste customers in the city to around 45,000.
Information leaflets, green wheeled bins and calendars detailing collection days will be delivered in early June. The first collections will begin week commencing 15 June 2009.
Steve Morgan, cabinet member for the environment said: “This is part of a wider scheme by the city council to achieve a minimum recycling rate of fifty per cent, helping to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. And comes as a result of residents wanting to increase the amount they recycle.
“The decomposition of biodegradable matter, such as garden waste, which occurs at landfill produces methane which is more harmful to the environment that CO2.”

The new garden waste bins are for the collection of garden waste only. It is important no food waste is included within the green wheeled bins to avoid contamination.
Items which will be collected include: grass cuttings; weeds, flowers, leaves and bark; hedge and shrub cuttings; tree stumps, twigs and branches up to 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and Christmas trees cut into 1 metre (3ft) sections.
The city council is promoting the use of home compost units for residents to compost items not able to be collected in the green bins.
