Would you like to be a Master Composter?

An appeal for volunteers has been launched to try and reduce the amount of waste that gets sent to landfill and encourage more people to take up home composting.

Would you like to be a Master Composter? This voluntary role would involve promoting composting within your local community. This could include carrying out presentations and demonstrating how to make good compost to various interested parties such as schools, allotment and gardening groups and even your neighbours.

Nick Baker, Waste Reduction Adviser for WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) who will be undertaking the training, said: “This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in environmental issues. Similar projects elsewhere in the country have proved very successful. You don’t have to be an expert, as full training will be given.”

“Household waste can be a brilliant resource - by using it you can create some terrific compost within 12 months. We want to spread this message to as many people as possible.”

Meanwhile, Master Composters can also attend council run roadshows, to promote composting at various events around the County.

Simon Brown, Community Liaison and PR Officer for Gloucestershire County Council Waste Management Unit said:
“Obviously some volunteers will be able to commit more hours than others. This role is flexible, so if time is limited, Master Composters can concentrate on areas which interest them most. For example some volunteers may just want to write a few articles for the gardening section of their local paper, or for village newsletters. Others may have time to set up and run a new community composting project”

Training will take place on November 21st in Gloucester, and those interested should contact Simon Brown, Community Liaison and PR Officer for Waste Management on 01452 425325 or email him on simon.brown@gloucestershire.gov.uk
