Community Groups
The Zero Waste Challenge Week is a fun opportunity for you to see how much you can reduce what you throw away over one week.
How can I promote this to my local community?
Your local community can be as big or as small as you like. Make sure that you select an area that is manageable for you. You may choose to promote the scheme to a particular street, village or just the people you know well – whatever works best for you.
Remember that not everyone will want to take part but if every group can encourage just a few people to get involved that will add up to a lot of people across Gloucestershire.
What do I need to do?
- Download the participants pack on the right hand side and read through the guidance to familiarise yourself with the information and the project aims.
- Publicise the week and encourage people to take part
- Issue a participants pack to anyone wishing to take part or alternatively take their contact details and forward them to waste@gloucestershire.gov.uk for a pack to be issued or they can visit our website to download the participants pack and other waste reduction information.
- Once the week is over, complete the questionnaire in the participants pack and return it to the FREEPOST address given.
- Finally don’t forget to send in your own record sheet for the week.
Ideas for publicising the zero waste challenge week in your community
Word of mouth; family and friends, key people, community outlets, events etc
Publicity Materials; posters, local area door drops, write to organisations, publicise on any relevant websites.
Set a competition
Competitions – you could set up a competition e.g. which street can get the most number of people to take part or which street can reduce their waste by the most.
Encouraging people to take part
Not everyone will want to take part in the Zero Waste Challenge Week, however sometimes a bit a persuasion may help encourage someone who is undecided.
- Do the challenge yourself.
- Let people know they cannot lose
- It doesn’t mean you can’t use anything
- Use the ideas from the participant pack -
- Tell them about others - a Gloucestershire family are already working towards zero waste http://myzerowaste.com/
