Interested in setting up a community compost scheme?

Roadworks warning sign, with giant can on wheelsPlease note: The event planned by the Community Composting Network (CCN) for Monday 20th December at the Bluecoat Room, Gloucester Guildhall, (23 Eastgate street) and referred to in the article below has been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

CCN are hoping to reschedule the meeting in the future.

We are intending to video the presentations instead and put them online with pdfs of the slides. And we will look at whether we can re-schedule the forum for another date after Christmas. However the time we have for the whole project is very short so this might not be possible.

We will keep you well informed of any further planning about the forum.
Kind regards
Cath Kibbler

Gloucestershire currently has a number of successful community composting schemes, based in local villages and within allotment sites. Such projects are run by dedicated volunteers. Local householders (who usually pay a small annual charge) are able to take their green waste to a main site in a village or town for composting. By using a local facility like this, it save residents time and money by not having to drive to their local Household Recycling Centre, and they are able to use the finished compost produced at the community composting site.

Would you like to find out more about community composting? How could it help a community become more sustainable and resilient in the face of new challenges from climate change to austerity cutbacks? How do you make great compost and what’s the best way to use it? These are some of the questions that the Community Composting Network (CCN) will hope to answer at ‘An Introduction to Community Composting’ at the Bluecoat Room, Gloucester Guildhall, (23 Eastgate street) on the 20th December 2010 from 7pm until 9pm. The event is free but booking is advised.

This event is open to anyone, individuals, social enterprises, existing community groups, schools, clubs and associations who might be interested in community composting and its associated activities. These include growing activities and recycling, reducing carbon footprints, protecting natural resources such as peatlands and providing small scale local services with a big social agenda. People coming to the evening event will have a chance to meet others from around Gloucestershire with similar aims.

The aim of the event is to inform people about the benefits of community composting and follow-up free training workshops for people wanting to start their own schemes. The CCN want to help a minimum of four new groups in Gloucestershire set up and run their own schemes as soon as possible. The workshops will run over 2 or 3 days early in the new year and are free, thanks to funding from the national WRAP/REalliance partnership programme.

If you would like to attend the introduction event and/or would like more information about the workshops, please visit www.communitycompost.org or email localcompost@communitycompost.org or call 0114 2580483
