Old TV with static and aerialGoing digital? Don’t forget you can recycle your old TV!

The digital switch over is coming to the parts of Gloucestershire which are served by the West TV Region. If you receive ‘Points West’ from the BBC then you will be affected. The switch over will be in two stages; BBC analogue channels will be switched off on the 24th of March and all other analogue channels will be switched off on the 7th of April. To find out when you are affected visit http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/home

With this in mind many of us will be thinking about purchasing new televisions with integrated digital receivers. If you do decide to opt for this, remember you can take your old TV to your local Household Recycling Centre (the tip) where it can be recycled. At present Gloucestershire recycles approximately 5000 analogue television sets a month. To find the location of your local Household Recycling Centre (HRC) please click here. Remember that you don’t necessarily have to get rid of your existing analogue TV, digital set top boxes are available from shops relatively cheaply, and these will enable you to receive a digital signal and convert it for use by your analogue set.

If your TV still works it may be suitable for reuse and could find a new home at one of the furniture reuse centres in Gloucestershire**. These organisations collect unwanted furniture and electrical goods, mending and making them safe before selling them at a discounted price to low income households and in some cases the general public.

Homes receiving BBC ‘Midlands Today’ in Gloucestershire are scheduled to switch over in 2011.

**Furniture reuse centres will be happy to receive donated sets BUT:-

  • They must be in full working order and in good condition
  • They must have a working remote control with them
  • They must have at least one working SCART socket
  • It is advised to call in advance of donating your TVs.
