Master Composters Update

We have a group of 18 Master Composters (MCs) in the County. They voluntarily promote the benefits of home and community composting by attending events, writing articles and even just by talking to neighbours.

The Master Composters group continues to flourish and they have recently attended a number of events such as the Barnwood Park Family Fun Day, Podsmead Community Fun Day and Daylesford Summer Show.

Attendance at further events is planned, including St James City Farm Grow Vision Family Day and the Moreton Agricultural Show.  Jane Willoughby and Kate Cole also attended Master Composter in Schools training at Garden Organic.

Eight Master Composters recently attended their AGM at Severn Trent’s Hayden LaneSewage Treatment Works. They were particularly interested in Anaerobic Digestion as used in the sewage industry. They were shocked at the increase in usage of ‘flushable’ antibacterial wipes. These are causing the sewage industry big problems, and can lead to blocked drains. The MCs would like to thank Severn Trent for hosting the event.

Resources are available to support the MCs including a demonstration compost bin, literature and display materials. Support and training are also available.

New volunteers are always welcome, and can email waste@gloucestershire.gov.uk to find out more.  We are particularly keen to hear from potential Master Composters living in the South Cotswolds, and the Forest of Dean area.
