Join Gloucestershire's Big Tidy Up!

The Big Tidy Up!Residents are being asked to join in with Gloucestershire’s ‘Big Tidy Up’ which is taking place during Recycle Week from 20th to 26th June.

Something new for Recycle Week this year is the partnership between Keep Britain Tidy and Recycle Now. The Keep Britain Tidy campaign has been running for more than 50 years, with the aim of inspiring others to take practical action to tackle litter. Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Big Tidy Up’ campaign focuses on collecting litter with the support of local charities and voluntary groups. For more information please visit: www.thebigtidyup.org.

Gloucestershire is a beautiful county, and we all want to keep it that way. Your local councils are doing their bit, but clearing up litter is a costly business, and a waste of resources that could be better used.  In fact it’s estimated that keeping our streets clean costs our councils about £4,800,000 every year with a whopping 10,000 tonnes of litter and street sweepings being collected for disposal.

We are urging residents and visitors not to drop litter, and to either use public bins when out and about or take rubbish home for disposal.

The Keep Britain Tidy Campaign estimate that 60% of litter can be recycled (mainly plastic bottles and drinks cans), so why not put your recyclable litter in community recycling banks if you are passing (for example there are facilities at many supermarkets in the county – click here for locations). Alternatively separate out your recyclable litter when you get home and use your council’s recycling collections.

Gloucestershire’s councils are supporting a number of ‘Big Tidy Up’ litter picks across the county and there is likely to be a litter pick taking place in your area so why not join in? Click here to view a list.

Alternatively you could get together with other members of your community and organise your own. If you’d like to get involved then contact your District Council. (Please note this is important, and you are strongly recommended to do this as your District Council can help with litter picking equipment, can arrange to collect your litter when you have finished and can give advice including health and safety and insurance guidance).
