Community Composting

This involves residents taking their garden waste to one central point in the neighbourhood. Once composted, the product is shared out between members of the community composting scheme.

Not only does it encourage community spirit, but reduces the number of trips residents have to make to the local Household Recycling Centre, therefore reducing your carbon footprint.

I’m interested… what do I do now?

1) Find out if there is a demand for a project by doing some market research – speak to local residents and attract some publicity in the local press.

2) Once you have established that there is enough interest, you need to form a working group of at least four or five dedicated volunteers, and attract a further pool of volunteers to help out on the site.

3) Finding a suitable site can often be quite challenging – but help and advice is available from Gloucestershire County Council. The site must have good access for cars and people, and ideally be more than 250m away from housing, schools, hospitals and areas of special wildlife interest. It must also be a reasonable distance away from watercourses.

Gloucestershire County Council can provide you with the help and advice you need to get started.
