Gloucester City’s new recycling service, which was launched in February, has been a great success.
The aim of the service, which includes the weekly collection of food waste, is to encourage residents to recycle more and reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill. In May, Gloucester City achieved a 52 per cent recycling and composting rate – an increase of nearly 20 per cent from their previous figure.*
That’s excellent news and shows in particular how the collection of food waste can make a real difference to the recycling and composting rate.
As explained in the ‘Master Composters Column’ the food waste is taken to Rose Hill Farm in Dymock, where it is processed in an in-vessel composter. The end product is soil conditioner, which has already been used by council gardeners to keep the city in bloom!
One third of the food we buy goes in the bin, and ideally we wouldn’t have any food waste. However, at least such waste is being put to good use!
