Landfill – up close and on TV

A new viewing platform has been installed at Wingmoor Landfill site – so people can see for themselves what happens to waste when it is buried underground.

The official launch of the viewing platform was covered on television by ITV West and BBC Points West, as well as the local press. Children from Cranham Church of England School visited the site on the day, with Hannah Gray – Waste Education Officer for the County Council – acting as the tour guide. Many more schools will be seeing for themselves a bird’s eye view of the landfill site, as Hannah is already booked solid with school visits.

Landfilling waste is becoming increasingly expensive, with local taxpayers in Gloucestershire expected to pay 7.7 million pounds in Landfill Tax for this financial year alone! The practice is also harmful to the environment, as it creates methane – a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and a contributing factor to climate change.
