Household Waste

Gloucestershire produces about 290,000 tonnes of household rubbish a year and at the moment around 70% of this is buried in landfill sites.

Landfill sites are basically just holes in the ground where rubbish is buried. Our two landfill sites - at Hempsted, Gloucester and Wingmoor Farm, Bishop's Cleeve - are nearly full. And at current rates they will be full in the next 10 to 15 years.

Landfill sites are unpopular and finding space for a new one is very difficult. It is important for us to find a more environmentally friendly way of dealing with our waste.
